The CVLTVS HONOR VIRTVS Crop Top carries the CVLTVS HONOR VIRTVS artwork by Raf The Might, the artist behind work for Slayer, Behemoth, Ozzy Osbourne and Lamb of God, on a body-hugging four-way-stretch top built for training and worn well beyond it. On the front, IRON IMPERIVM above the horned mask of an enraged faun, flanked by two griffins over a CVLTVS HONOR VIRTVS banner. Around the back and side, IRON IMPERIVM in tall vertical letters between two winged Victories, one eagle-headed, one wolf-headed. A Greek key band runs the full way round the hem. CULTURE, VIRTUE, HONOUR

CVLTVS is not "cult". It is the Latin cultus, what you tend every day; the Romans spoke of cultus corporis, the training of the body. VIRTVS was courage proven under pressure, and Rome showed the goddess Virtus in armour, with helmet and spear. Livy records that when Cloelia led hostages to safety across the Tiber, Rome honoured her virtus with an equestrian statue. HONOR is what that courage earns. Culture first, virtue built on it, honour earned through it.

THE GUARDIANS: FRONT

The two griffins. Lion's body, eagle's head and wings. The Greeks gave them to Apollo and to Nemesis, and Rome carried Nemesis into the arena as the patron of gladiators.

The horned faun. Faunus, Rome's ancient god of the wild woods, merged with the horned Greek Pan, whose name gives us panic: the sudden fear that breaks a line. The face here is the god angered.

THE VICTORIES: BACK AND SIDE

Nike to the Greeks, Victoria to Rome. The two figures take the pose of the Winged Victory of Samothrace, the marble Nike alighting on a ship's prow that now stands in the Louvre, headless. Raf The Might gives each one a head: the eagle of Jupiter, the aquila Gaius Marius made the sole standard of every legion, and the wolf of Mars, which marched beside the eagle as a standard before him.

THE MEANDER: HEM

The Greek key takes its ancient name, meandros, from the Maeander river in Asia Minor, whose winding course was a byword for turning back on itself. One unbroken line, folding and never ending. It ran round Greek vases from the Geometric period and bordered the mosaic floors of Roman villas. Here it closes the top all the way round.

TRAINING APPLICATIONS

Built to move: lifting, conditioning, BJJ warm-ups, HIIT and the run home. Four-way stretch holds its shape through squats, presses and overhead work, and goes from the gym floor to the gig without changing.

TACTICAL SIZING NOTE

Body-hugging fit by design. Take your usual size for a close, second-skin fit; size up if you prefer a little more room through the chest and ribs.

PRODUCT CARE

Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Do not bleach. Hang-dry for the longest life. Do not iron directly on the print. Do not dry clean.

What is the band around the bottom?
The Greek key, or meander: a single unbroken line named after the winding Maeander river, used on Greek pottery and Roman mosaics for centuries.
