The CVLTVS HONOR VIRTVS Women's Tee carries the CVLTVS HONOR VIRTVS artwork by Raf The Might, the artist behind work for Slayer, Behemoth, Ozzy Osbourne and Lamb of God, on a semi-fitted ring-spun cotton cut. On the front, IRON IMPERIVM above the horned mask of an enraged faun, flanked by two griffins over a CVLTVS HONOR VIRTVS banner. Down the back, IRON IMPERIVM in tall vertical letters between two winged Victories, one eagle-headed, one wolf-headed. Made to order in Black, Navy and White. Ancient Roots, Modern Defiance. Dare. VIRTUE HAS NO GENDER
VIRTVS was courage proven under pressure, and Rome gave it a woman's form: the goddess Virtus stood in armour, with helmet and spear. Livy records that when the hostage Cloelia led the captive girls out of the Etruscan camp and across the Tiber, Rome honoured her virtus with an equestrian statue on the Sacred Way. CVLTVS is not "cult" but culture, what you tend every day. HONOR is what virtue earns. And the figures on the back, the Victories who crown the winner, were always goddesses.
THE GUARDIANS: FRONT
The two griffins. Lion's body, eagle's head and wings. The Greeks gave them to Apollo and to Nemesis, goddess of retribution, and Rome carried Nemesis into the arena as the patron of gladiators.
The horned faun. Faunus, Rome's ancient god of the wild woods, merged with the horned Greek Pan, whose name gives us panic: the sudden fear that breaks a line. The face here is the god angered.
THE VICTORIES: BACK
Nike to the Greeks, Victoria to Rome. Both figures take the pose of the Winged Victory of Samothrace, the marble Nike alighting on a ship's prow that stands headless in the Louvre. Raf The Might gives each one a head: the eagle of Jupiter, the aquila Gaius Marius made the sole standard of every legion, and the wolf of Mars, the she-wolf who nursed Romulus and Remus, which marched beside the eagle as a standard before him.
