CVLTVS: Not a Cult, a Culture. What Cultus Means in Latin

Quick answer: Cultus is a Latin noun from the verb colere, "to till, to tend, to honour". Romans used it for the care of a field, the training of a body, the worship of the gods and, in Caesar's words, the culture of a civilisation. English "cult" grew from only one of those meanings. CVLTVS, the first word of our new collection CVLTVS HONOR VIRTVS, means culture: what you tend every day.

Where does the word cultus come from?

Cultus is formed from colere, one of the oldest working verbs in Latin. A farmer colit his field: he ploughs it, weeds it, keeps it. The same verb covers living in a place, looking after a person and honouring a god. Each sense comes back to one act: care, repeated over time.

What did cultus mean to the Romans?

The dictionaries record a wide range of meanings, all from that one root:

Latin

Meaning

Example

cultus agri

the working of land

the farmer's year

cultus corporis

care and training of the body

dress, grooming, exercise

cultus deorum

honour paid to the gods

rites and offerings

cultus (of a people)

refinement, civilisation, culture

Caesar, Gallic War I.1

The field, the body and the gods were not three separate words in Rome. They were one word, cultus, because each one only exists through daily attention.

Does cultus really mean culture? Caesar's proof

Yes. The first page of Caesar's Gallic War (I.1) says the Belgae were the bravest of the Gauls because they lived furthest a cultu atque humanitate provinciae: "from the culture and civilisation of the Province". This is cultus meaning culture, in one of the most read sentences in Latin.

Caesar's full point is sharper than the quote. He says comfort and trade soften men, and distance from luxury keeps them hard. That is the culture CVLTVS stands for: tending and discipline, not comfort.

Cicero: philosophy as the cultivation of the mind

Cicero used cultus's sister word, cultura, in one of the most quoted lines of Roman philosophy: Cultura autem animi philosophia est (Tusculan Disputations II.13). "Philosophy is the cultivation of the mind."

He kept the farming image going. Philosophy, he writes, pulls vices out by the roots and prepares the mind to receive seed. A field left alone grows weeds. So does a mind. So does a body.

Is cultus the same as cult?

No, though they are related. English "cult" descends from cultus through one narrow sense: religious worship. Over centuries "cult" came to mean a closed group and blind devotion. The Latin word never lost its wider meaning of care, training and culture. When we write CVLTVS, we mean the whole word.

Why we named the collection CVLTVS HONOR VIRTVS

CVLTVS is not what you worship. It is what you tend: in the gym, in life, in the people you stand beside. It comes first in the collection's name because culture comes first. Virtue is built on it, and honour is earned through virtue.

The collection is designed by Raf The Might, artist for Slayer, Behemoth, Ozzy Osbourne and Lamb of God. The design is revealed on Friday 6 November. It launches at Iron Imperium Fest II on Saturday 14 November at The Dev, Camden, London. Entry is free.
