Quick answer: Agon (ἀγών) is the ancient Greek word for the contest: the struggle between rivals at the heart of the games at Olympia. It is the root of the English words agony, protagonist and antagonist. The hardest contest at Olympia was the pankration, a fight with almost no rules. Greek tradition says Heracles founded those games. AGON is also the name of our Iron Imperium x WarYoga tank top and rashguard.
What does agon mean?
Agon meant a contest, a struggle between opponents. Athletes competed in it, orators argued in it, and actors performed in it. The Greeks saw the contest as the place where a person was tested and shown for what they were.
English kept three words from it:

Meaning |
|---|---|---|

Agony |
agōnia |
the struggle itself, and its pain |
|
Protagonist |
prōtagōnistēs |
the first in the contest |
|
Antagonist |
antagōnistēs |
the one who stands against you |
The Greeks never separated the contest from the pain. Nor do we.
Who founded the Olympic games?
Greek tradition credits Heracles. The poet Pindar, writing in the 5th century BC, sings in his tenth Olympian Ode how Heracles established the four-yearly festival at Olympia and its first contests.
The prize for victory at Olympia was a crown of wild olive. Nothing else. Champions earned glory, not gold.
What was pankration?
Pankration was the ancient Greek combat sport that came closest to modern MMA. The name joins pan (all) and kratos (strength): "all strength". It was added to the Olympic programme in 648 BC.
Fighters could strike, kick, throw, choke and lock joints. There were only two rules: no biting and no gouging. The fight ended when one man raised his hand to concede, or could no longer go on.
Arrhichion: the champion crowned dead
In 564 BC Arrhichion of Phigalia fought for his third straight Olympic pankration title. In the final his opponent wrapped his legs around Arrhichion's body and choked him with both hands.
With his last strength Arrhichion dislocated his opponent's toe. The opponent gave up in pain. In that same moment Arrhichion died of suffocation. The judges crowned his body and declared him champion. The story is told by Pausanias in his Description of Greece (VIII.40).
Heracles: immortality earned, not given
Heracles was the son of Zeus, yet immortality was not handed to him. He earned it through twelve labours, one after another, until the gods took him up to Olympus. For the Greeks he was the model of strength won through struggle: even a god's son had to fight for it.
That is why his head is carved across the back of the AGON tank top.
Seneca: why the bruises matter
The Roman Stoic Seneca put the idea into one line: "No athlete can bring great spirit to the contest who has never been bruised" (Letters 13.2). Confidence is built in the struggle, not before it.
